7th Settlement creates special beer

7th Settlement continues its emphasis on community engagement

Reflecting its mission to collaborate and support the local community, 7 th Settlement of Dover has created a Colonial-inspired beer as part of the American Independence Museum’s Beer for History festival on Thursday, May 19 in Exeter. The event, sponsored by Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law of Portsmouth, is the first of three family-friendly events this year designed highlight the importance of history in a fun and creative way.

“History does matter, and these events serve to highlight that in a way that we feel will attract people that may not know about us,” said Museum Executive Director Julie Williams. “The hope is people will then discover what we offer here and come back for a visit or to attend our other events and programming.”

Founded in 1991, the Museum features a world-class collection, including an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, handwritten letters by George Washington and drafts of the U.S. Constitution.

In honor of the Museum’s role in the community, 7th Settlement has soaked its Almighty Brown Ale soaked with White Oak chips. “This idea comes from the notion that historically, in this area, beers would be held and aged in White Oak barrels, which would give the beers a distinct woody flavor,” said 7th Settlement Brewer and Exeter resident Nate Sephton. “This flavor profile should be represented with this brew as well.”

According to Rob Levey, 7th Settlement’s participation along with that of Exeter’s Neighborhood Beer Co. and Portland, Maine’s D.L. Geary Brewing Company highlights the region’s continued fascination with history.

“It was not a tough sell to get these brewers on board,” he said. “I explained what we wanted to do—and they pretty much all immediately said, ‘Count us in.’ I can’t thank 7th Settlement, Neighborhood Beer Co. and Geary’s enough. Their involvement and support is tremendous.”

Levey also applauded Hoefle Phoenix Gormley & Roberts, P.A. Attorneys at Law for their sponsorship of the series, which continues on June 23 with a Tavern Night theme and October 20 with a Fall Harvest theme.

“Without their sponsorship, we could not have pulled this series off,” he said. “They are committed to our mission and have made a substantial investment to ensure a successful series and help us move forward with our strategic initiatives as an agency.”

Tickets for each event in the series will be $30 and include food, samplings of beer, games for kids, and more. Members of the Museum may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $25.
