Acclaimed Photographer Completes First Book

On Friday, June 6th from 5 pm to 8 pm, photographer Richard Moore will sign copies of his first book, Monhegan Come Again, at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth. The culmination of visits he made to Monhegan Island over the course of two years, the backdrop for the project is the 400th anniversary of Captain John Smith’s first landing there in 1614.

As with prior projects, Moore produced what he refers to as “twice-seen” images, photocomposites of digitally merged antique and contemporary photographs in the same location. To create these images, which generally span a century or more, he utilized what he refers to as “forensic photography.”

“Twice-seen images always begin with the antique image and the search for the original camera location,” he said. “I love the forensics—looking for that rock still emerging from the ground, or the geometry of a surviving building, sometimes a tree now grown old and broken, or a feature on the horizon.”

In creating images for Monhegan Come Again, Moore said he sought to capture the island’s transition from a culture of fishermen to artists. In addition to the photographs, the book features a foreword by historian Earle Shettleworth, Jr., an essay by photographer Douglas D. Prince, a poem by Iris Miller, and excerpts from a journal Moore kept while on the island.

Moore’s book signing coincides with the city of Portsmouth’s Art ‘Round Town in which numerous galleries throughout downtown stay open late on the first Friday of each month to promote art and the artists behind it. Featuring complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres, Moore’s book signing will take place from 5 pm to 8 pm at 136 State Street in Portsmouth at the New Hampshire Art Association’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.
