Carriage House Fire In Portsmouth Brought Under Control In 45 Minutes

PORTSMOUTH, NH — A detached carriage house fire on Lincoln Avenue in Portsmouth was brought under control late Monday night, according to Assistant Chief Jason Gionet.

Portsmouth Fire companies were dispatched at 11 p.m. to 188 Lincoln Avenue for a report of a fire. Engine 1 and Ambulance 4 were the first units on scene. The incident commander was Chief William McQuillen.

When those first crews arrived, they found a detached carriage house behind the residence with heavy fire coming from the structure, according to the incident summary. The building was listed as an unoccupied detached garage.

Firefighters stretched two 1 3/4-inch hose lines to the rear of the residence to extinguish the main fire building and protect surrounding buildings from becoming involved, according to the report. The fire was knocked down and declared under control at 11:45 p.m. Crews then remained at the scene for about an hour for overhaul.

Additional Portsmouth Fire Department units at the scene were Truck 2, Ambulance 2, Ambulance 3, Chief 1, Chief 2, and Chief 3. Mutual aid sent to the scene included Newington Engine 4, Kittery Engine 5, PNSY Ladder 81, and Rye Ambulance 2. Mutual aid sent to coverage included Dover Engine 3 and Exeter Ambulance.

Gionet said there were no injuries.

The incident summary also stated there were no smoke detectors or sprinkler systems in the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
