ALTON, NH — A 46-year-old hiker from Portsmouth passed away Sunday following a medical emergency on Mount Major, according to authorities.

First responders located the hiker roughly three-quarters of a mile from the trailhead. When they arrived, fellow hikers on the trail were administering CPR to the victim.

First responders took over life-saving efforts and transported the man down to the trailhead parking lot using an off-road utility vehicle (UTV). They then transferred him to a waiting ambulance and took him to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.

Despite continuous resuscitative efforts by emergency crews and hospital staff, the hiker was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity pending family notification, and the official cause of death remains under review.
