Crash Closes Elwyn Road in Portsmouth for 45 Minutes
Honda Civic collides with tree; witness report the driver may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

Elwyn Road was closed for about 45 minutes on Aug. 4, 2015, after a crash at just before 8 p.m., according to the Portsmouth Police Department.
Officers and Portsmouth Fire and Rescue teams were called to the area near 893 Elwyn Road at 7:45 p.m. after numerous 911 calls reported multiple injuries and ejected occupants.
On scene, according to police, officers determined a 2011 Honda Civic driven by Lowell, MA, resident was traveling on Elwyn Road toward Route 1 when “his vehicle exited the travel lane, crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and onto the opposite shoulder,” according to a report by Sgt. Kuffer Kaltenborn. ”There, it collided with a tree, rotated and came to rest on the property of 893 Elwyn Road.”

The driver and four adult passengers were wearing seatbelts and all front and side curtain airbags deployed. There is no evidence to suggest anyone in the car was ejected, according to Kaltenborn. All occupants were evaluated by EMTs and released on scene.
“Witnesses report the driver may have fallen asleep moments before the collision,” according to Kaltenborn. “Elwyn Road was closed for approximately 45 minutes as a result of this emergency.”
