Dermatology and Skin Health Introduce Mendese as New Mohs Surgeon

New Addition Adds Bolstered Service Offering for Dover Practice in Regard to the Removal of Invasive Skin Cancers

Dermatology & Skin Health has long been on the frontline of the education, prevention, and combative measures in the eradication of skin cancer. The healthcare practice is pleased to welcome new Mohs surgeon, Gary Mendese to the team in an effort to strengthen their service offerings when it comes to the surgical practices linked to ridding people of diagnosed skin cancers.

Mendese currently practices at Mystic Valley Dermatology and will continue to split time between the two. He’ll be one of the very few Mohs surgeons accessible to the Seacoast New Hampshire area. He began his Mohs practices at American College of Mohs Surgery in Madison, Wisconsin and is an esteemed member of the organization’s Mohs Surgery Fellowship.

Developed by Dr. Frederick Mohs in the 1930s, Mohs micrographic surgery has, with a few refinements, come to be embraced over the past decade by an increasing number of surgeons for an ever-widening variety of skin cancers.

Today, Mohs surgery has come to be accepted as the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (BCCs and SCCs), the two most common skin cancers. It accomplishes the nifty trick of sparing the greatest amount of healthy tissue while also most completely expunging cancer cells; cure rates for BCC and SCC are an unparalleled 98 percent or higher with Mohs, significantly better than the rates for standard excision or any other accepted method. “I’ve always been interested in procedurally oriented surgery, particularly with cancer and the painstakingly precise practice of taking it out and putting the patient back together again,” said Mendese. “The method of Mohs surgery appeals to me because all of the patients are awake during the procedure and I have the appreciated opportunity to learn their life story while we’re going through the procedure. We’re in it together, and all I want is great results to enable them to continue on with the next chapter of that story.”
