DIY Entertainment for Winter 2015

Some fun ideas to make the most of our record-breaking winter!

There are officially 28 days left until Spring (at least according to the calendar) and we can’t wait to be soaking in the sun again! While it might seem far off, warm weather is just around the corner! (we hope.) Until then, here are some ideas for what to do with all that snow – and all the cold weather – so that you can survive until the warmer months.

  1. Make an amazing snow fort.
All that snow out there? Ideal for making an igloo or a tunnel or an extra refrigerator for your frozen food section. Is your basement door snowed in? Instead of shoveling it out YET AGAIN, dig your way out with a tunnel! Just be careful to support the tunnel enough so that it won’t collapse on you. (And if you’re claustrophobic, this probably isn’t the right activity for you.) OR if you’re feeling really ambitious, try bringing Frozen to life with your own snow castle:

  2. Make a blanket fort.
If the outdoors, cold, or snow aren’t your thing, you can always bring the fun indoors with a cozy blanket fort! (Adults can hang out in blanket forts too.) Build an epic blanket fort and then snuggle in for a day of Netflix and hot chocolate!

  3. Make a dent in the NY Times Best Seller List.
Curl up next to the fire with a good book – or twenty. Perfect for days without power – you can get a lot of reading done before the sun goes down.

  4. Get beach bod ready.
All that time stuck inside or outside shoveling gives you lots of time to tone. There are tons of workouts you can do at home without any equipment. Plus the physical activity will warm you up!

  5. Brunch!
Nothing is more magical on a cold winter day than sitting with your friends in a cozy booth sipping mimosas. Portsmouth has a lot of great brunch options – Book & Bar, District, and BRGR Bar all have amazing brunches on the weekends, and the Friendly Toast lets you brunch all day long.

  6. Take a quick vacation.
If you don’t have the time or the money for a long vacation in warmer weather, just get a little farther south for the weekend, like New York City, where there’s less snow and more fun. Like theBrooklyn Flea – a HUGE indoor flea market that runs on Saturdays and Sundays, where you can pick up amazing furniture, crafts, and more from local vendors.

If none of these ideas spark any interest, hop on some skis or snowshoes and head on out for an adventure. I mean, come on, it’s New Hampshire.
