On June 15th, Martin England will be leading his second benefit concert for the South Berwick Library’s Building Fund. The first fundraiser, last spring, raised over $1200. The singer/songwriter will be joined by a full band playing his original “amerifolkana”-style songs.
“Last year's South Berwick Library Benefit show resonated through my mind all year long,” says England. “So many great connections were formed that night, and folks were very engaging. It's such an honor to support a cause that continually gives back to its community, intellectually and educationally. As a society, we either pay for institutions that support creativity, learning and education, or we pay to build prisons and rehab centers. The choice seems pretty simply to me. Reading is knowledge. Knowledge is power. It allows us to be free, to form our own opinions and expand our imaginations.”
This year England is adding some of his friends, calling themselves the “Reconstructed,” to allow for more “foot-stomping, hand-clapping, and hooting-hollering.” The lineup includes Courtney Brocks (banjo, backing vocals), Jesse Dold (guitar, ukulele), Andrew Russell (from the Molenes on bass), and Thanks to Gravity alum Sean Daniels (drums) and Andy Happel (fiddle). Together, Martin England and the Reconstructed have sold out four straight shows at the Press Room in Portsmouth. According to England, they look forward to delivering their emotionally-charged, folk-and-roll music to the amazing folks of South Berwick, Eliot, and the greater Seacoast.
