ANGER HELP FOR EVERYDAY PARENTING: No matter how much you love your children, it’s natural to feel stress, frustration or anger when children are constantly in your personal space, thwarting your personal agenda and activating your personal triggers. But you can’t get results with kids if you can’t handle your emotions. You can learn strategies to handle these emotions, then choose how to respond to challenges. Each class will include strategies that you can use at home. Many parents, like you, have found solutions in these classes! AUTISM SPECTRUM TOOLBOX: This presentation and Q&A for parents of children on the Autism Spectrum will provide tips and techniques using evidence-based practices that aim to improve behavior, emotional functioning and social interactions. Learn about the Incredible 5- Point Scale, how picture schedules can help, and the value of social stories. Bring questions and examples of daily challenges, which may be used to model how to use techniques. MORE 1-2-3 MAGIC: Parents of two-year-olds to teens will leave this program with strategies proven to get kids to start good behaviors. Challenges such as getting kids to go to bed, get up and out on time in the morning, clean up, behave well at meals, and do their homework will become easier. The program includes video, lecture and demonstrations, discussion and practical activities. You don’t have to have taken the original 1-2-3 Magic program to get a lot of out this one. STRESS AND CHILDREN: HOW PARENTS CAN HELP: A significant number of youth report feeling ‘stressed out.’ Such feelings can negatively impact children’s academic functioning and social and family relationships. Dr. Laura Rubin, a licensed clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, will discuss how stress impacts children and practical ways to reduce stress, with a focus on learning to identify signs of stress in children, strategies for helping decrease children’s stress, and understanding how parent stress contributes to child stress. BABYTIME: An educational, playful and supportive group for babies up to 12 months and their parents; expecting parents also welcome. A developmental therapist from Portsmouth Regional Hospital’s Children’s Rehab Center comes to Babytime once a month to talk about infants’ motor, social/emotional, language and brain development.
