Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting itself and healing. When we get injured, the body sends helper cells to the area to keep it clean and begin the repair process. Inflammation in the short term is good and speeds up healing, but chronic or long-term inflammation can be damaging to the body.
A common and very effective method of managing chronic inflammation is by eating a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods. Foods rich in mono and polyunsaturated fats, protein, and antioxidants help quell inflammation and even repair cells. It is important to consume a wide variety of colorful foods to give your body the most protection. Here is a list of the top anti-inflammatory foods:
- Berries
- Fatty fish
- Nuts such as almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts
- Seeds such as flax, chia, and hemp
- Herbs such as basil, cilantro, parsley and oregano
- Spices such as cinnamon, clove, cumin, and curry
- Dark leafy greens such as spinach, collard greens or kale
- Cruciferous vegetables such as Brussel's sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli
- Whole grains such as rice, Kamut, and farro
- Garlic and onions
- Olive oil, avocadoes, coconut oil
This list does not take into account each individual’s needs and possible sensitivities. Foods that are protective for some, may be troublesome for others. If you’re curious about your food sensitivities, the D’Adamo Institute offers testing for over 250 foods!
