Firefighters Knock Down Portsmouth Manufactured Home Fire
Chief McQuillen: The fire that torched a manufactured home at Oriental Gardens on Wednesday was caused by a candle.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — A fire at a manufactured home in Portsmouth on Wednesday was caused by a candle, according to Chief William McQuillen of the Portsmouth Fire Department.
Around 12:30 p.m., firefighters were sent to Oriental Gardens for a report of a fire with people still inside the home. When they arrived, Engine 3 saw the fire had spread to most of the structure. The firefighters met with the family and found that the two people who lived there were safe, McQuillen said.
“The fire was extinguished and placed under control in just over an hour,” he said.

The two residents were displaced and referred to the Red Cross for shelter and assistance.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Portsmouth Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau and determined accidental from a candle being lit, McQuillen said.

“The Portsmouth Fire Department would like to remind everyone that candles should be in a sturdy holder that can’t be knocked over and never leave candles unattended,” he added.
Firefighters and EMTs provided mutual aid from Dover, Greenland, Hampton, Newington, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Rye, and Kittery, Maine.
