PORTSMOUTH, NH — Portsmouth police are warning the public that a number of streets are closed or have traffic delays due to a natural gas leak in the city. Officers and fire and rescue teams were sent to the area of Islington and Bartlett streets at just after noon Friday for a report of a leak. According to Lt. David Keaveny, the leak was caused by a construction accident and it is isolated to this one area of the city.

"The fire department and gas company are working on containing the leak but we are suggesting avoiding the area," he added. "Islington Street in the area of Darleen’s is closed. Bartlett Street traffic will also be delayed as will Cate Street."

An update will be issued when the work area has been cleared.
