Hydrographic Surveying In Portsmouth Harbor and Other Tales of the High Seas

NOAA geologist David Cole discusses hydrographic surveying, nautical charting, and ocean mapping on the Piscataqua River and beyond.

The Portsmouth Athenaeum’s 2015 Program Series continues on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 pm with NOAA marine surveyor David Cole’s account of the evolution of hydrographic surveying, nautical charting, and ocean mapping—from the early techniques of the US Coast and Geodesic Survey to today’s methods. Cole will relate how the Piscataqua River played a significant role in this history in 1997, when a pioneering hydrographic survey of the approach to Portsmouth Harbor incorporated total coverage of the ocean floor.

Dave Cole spent most of his NOAA career specializing in hydrographic surveying, nautical charting, and ocean mapping. Today he educates as a UNH Marine Docent and volunteers on the Gundalow Piscataqua.

This event will be held at the Portsmouth Athenaeum Research Library, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth. Please call (603) 431-2538, Ext. 2 for reservations, as seating is limited. Program Series events are free to Athenaeum Proprietors, Subscribers and Friends, and are $10 for nonmembers.
