Marple and James Building Gets Face-Lift
A controversial piece of street art is no more.
Cathy Sununu, director of the Portsmouth Museum of Art, said earlier this fall that "The Face" would not be retained by the owners of the Maple and James building located on the corner of State and Pleasant streets.
The reason was because the facade of the building was in rough shape and needed to be painted over, she explained. Within the last week, "The Face," which was created by artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis above on the Marple and James building on 254 State St. was painted over.
When was unveiled this spring, "The Face," drew the most praise and ire from city residents and visitors alike because it was so imposing and literally in the face of motorists who drove down State Street or residents and visitors who walked past it.
