McPherson: Go to Dwyer's Pub!

There's a new pub in town, and you should go there.

There's a new pub in town, Dwyer's, located in the old Thai Paradise building at 96 Bridge Street. Cozy and small, it reminds me of the old Molly Mallone's on State Street, where I made my "home away from home" until sadly it closed in the autumn of 2009. Dwyer's feels like a pub – soft, warm colors, a long bar, and just a few tables...and only one TV on the wall. It's the kind of place where you can be comfortable reading a book, watching a game, playing cards, or chatting with friends, and not feel like you're just a number or on someone else's schedule. In one corner is a comfy little cubby with a dartboard, and against a back wall stands a juke box (playing CDs, not records; it's not that old-school)! My wife and I went to yesterday's soft opening, and fell instantly in love. The walls could use some decor, but that's understandable; they've literally just opened after all. I suggested that a picture of Michael Collins would look great. Co-owner Molly Dwyer laughed at the idea; I'm not sure if she realized I was serious. Full disclosure, I worked briefly with Molly. When she told me a couple of months ago that she was opening this place, and her vision, I was hopeful that she would pull it off. She (along with her brother, Kevin) absolutely has done so! Go to Dwyer's and have a cheap (for Portsmouth) pint and some good food. You won't be sorry!
