MLK Day Concert and Breakfast; Comedy and Film This Weekend

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day celebrations on tap.

As most city residents know, there is never a shortage of fun things to do or places to go in Portsmouth. Each Thursday, we will offer five suggestions for people who are planning out their weekends.

1. See "Midnight in Paris": The Portsmouth Public Library's winter film series continues on Thursday evening with the film, "Midnight in Paris." Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams star in this Woody Allen film where a young American writer finds adventure and romance in a 1920’s Parisian fantasy world populated by famous writers, artists and musicians, such as Ernest Hemingway and Zelda Fitzgerald. The movie begins at 7 p.m. and there is no admission.

2. Check out "Comedy Enlightened": The Players Ring will perform, "Comedy, Enlightened," a collection of plays written by Eric Doucet, featuring “The Inner Light Movement,” “Cool Hand Kenny,” “All Goats Lead to Home” and more, on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 7 p.m.

3. Martin Luther King, Jr., Birthday concert: On Sunday, the Portsmouth community will come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Civil Rights Movement leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with a birthday concert at the Middle Street Baptist Church from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no admission, but donations of money, checks or non-perishable food items for Seacoast Family Food Pantry are encouraged.

4. Martin Luther King, Jr., Breakfast: On Monday, Jan. 17, the community will also come together to celebrate the birthday of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with the annual breakfast at 7:45 a.m. at the Jarvis Center. The theme, of "Building the Beloved Community" will be celebrated. Student essay contest winners will be honored and an elementary school art exhibit will be featured. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Reginald Wilburn, Asst. Professor of English and African American Studies at UNH. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students.

5. Discover Portsmouth Center: The Discover Portsmouth Center on Middle Street is always a great place for families to learn more about the city's history and cultural heritage.
