A Museum on the Brink, Now on the Rise

The Director of the American Independence Museum shares the story of the museum's 2012 closure and comeback, Wednesday, March 16 at 7 pm.

In 2012, the American Independence Museum in Exeter, NH closed due to financial difficulties. A vital link to American Revolutionary history, the Independence Museum was home to New Hampshire’s first copy of the Declaration of Independence, and a rare Purple Heart medal awarded by George Washington. Its closure shook the community and the museum world. But after an intensive period of reorganization, self-study and strategic planning, the museum reopened, and has regained its stature among the Seacoast’s historical institutions.

Julie Hall Williams, Executive Director of the American Independence Museum in Exeter, will share the story of the organization’s struggles and recovery. Wednesday, March 16 at 7:00 pm, Portsmouth Athenaeum, 9 Market Square, Portsmouth. This event is free to members, $10 for nonmembers. For more information, call the Portsmouth Athenaeum at (603) 431-2538 x 2, email info@portsmouthathenaeum.org, or go to http://www.portsmouthathenaeum.org.
