Music Hall Announces Five New Shows

The Sweetback Sisters, Vaud and the Villains, and other artists coming to Portsmouth in July.

The Music Hall, the region’s center for performing arts, has just announced five new shows in July. New this year, programming at The Music Hall will run year round to include music, comedy, and literary events throughout the summer in addition to its regular film showings. Tickets for the five just announced shows go on sale to Music Hall members at noon, Friday, May 4, and to non-members at noon, Friday, May 18.

The latest music on the way will include The Sweetback Sisters (7/13), a self-dubbed “renegade retroband that mixes up country, swing and honky tonk,” appearing as part of  Live @ The Loft and Vaud and the Villains (7/14), mining the rich soil of the American Songbook - roots, traditional jazz, revival music, parlour music, gospel, zydeco, folk, coming to the Historic Theater as part of the Intimately Yours series. Writers will also join us both in the Loft and the Historic Theater. Deborah Harkness (7/19) comes to Writers in the Loft with Shadow of Night, the much anticipated sequel to her bestselling novel, A Discovery of Witches. Writers on a New England Stage series brings Chris Cleave (7/25), author of the #1 bestseller Little Bee and hailed as “one of the luminaries of modern fiction” with his new novel, Gold. Finally, for some midsummer Hilarity, check out Super Secret Project (7/20), returning with its “multi-media fused comedy rap show thingy” featuring classics and their latest material.

According to Therese LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming, “The Summer is for laughing, singing, dancing, listening and watching when you’re at The Music Hall. Be prepared to enjoy the wit and charm of Nellie McKay, the yodeling of the Sweetback Sisters along with our member’s appreciation night with Vaud & The Villains. These are just a few of the many things coming our way this summer in our two venues. Hope to see you here!”
