New Hampshire Film Event Named Academy Award Qualifying Festival

The 20th New Hampshire Film Festival returns in October and has been named an Academy Award qualifying festival for short film entries.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — For the 20th year, Portsmouth will be hosting the New Hampshire Film Festival this October.

The event will be in-person, from Oct. 6 to Oct. 9, after canceling in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. It will feature films, panel discussions, parties, networking events, and workshops. Nicole Gregg, the executive director of the festival, said day passes would be on sale soon, starting at $25, with access passes also available.

“We are beyond thrilled to finally celebrate our 20th-anniversary edition in person and bring together the best filmmakers from around the state and globe alongside our incredible community of attendees and sponsors,” she said. “It’s going to be a celebration like no other, and we are so grateful to showcase these amazing films and special events in our spectacular city of Portsmouth. We are also ecstatic to share so many new and exciting venues this city now has to offer — we can’t wait to welcome you all back this October.”

This year, winners of the festival’s Live Action Shorts Jury Award and Animation Shorts Jury Award may qualify for Oscar contention in those categories without having to have a standard theatrical run. The shorts must comply with other Academy rules though.

Entries are still being accepted into the festival for 2022.
