Portsmouth Fire Extinguishes Stark Street Home Fire

Report: Probable cause was accidental, spontaneous ignition of sawdust in a barrel.

Portsmouth Fire and Rescue teams were sent to a structure fire on Stark Street last night at a single-family home, according to a report.

Firefighters were called to the home at 107 Stark St. around 11:30 p.m. on OCt. 26, 2015, for heavy fire engulfing the rear of the structure, including a large deck and the back of the house.

Teams laid hose to the rear of the house to knock down the fire. Engines 1, 3, and 4, Tower 5, Ambulances 1 and 3, Chiefs 1, 2, and 3, and Prevention 1 were all at the scene. Mutual aid, including engines from Kittery, ME, and Rye Fire, as well as Newington Ambulance, were also working the scene. Off-duty firefighters as well as personnel from New Castle, Exeter, and Dover, were called to Portsmouth to assist.

The fire was under control at around 12:30 a.m.

According to a report, most of the worst damage was centered around the rear of the structure and a first floor back room. Heavy damage was also reported on the rear deck, exterior of the house, and a room of the first floor. The entire home has smoke damage.

The fire department has determined that the probable cause is accidental with “spontaneous ignition of sawdust in barrel,” according to the report.
