Portsmouth Man Arrested On Alleged Gun Threat Charge

Police: Michael Edwards allegedly pointed a handgun and threatened to kill another person due to a past debt.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — A local man was arrested today after an alleged threat incident last month, according to police. Michael Edwards, 50, of Melcher Street in Portsmouth, was arrested on Jan. 8, 2018, on a felony warrant after an alleged incident at around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2017, according to Lt. Mark Newport of the Portsmouth Police Department. A victim reported to police on Jan. 3, that on the morning in question, Edwards approached the victim inside a local residence and allegedly began a confrontation.

“During this confrontation, Edwards pointed a handgun at the victim and threatened to kill the victim over a past debt,” Newport stated. “(A detective) was able to determine this was an isolated incident and the public was never in any danger. The weapon was recovered and Edwards was fully cooperative in the investigation.”

Edwards was arrested on the warrant today and released on personal recognizance bail. The case, according to a report, will be handled through the Rockingham County Attorney Office’s Felonies First program.
