Portsmouth Police Investigating Possible OD On Lafayette Road

Police and the state's chief medical examiner's office is investigating the death of a man Friday that appears to be drug related.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Police announced that the department is investigating what is believed to be the city's second drug overdose for 2019. At around 3 a.m. Friday, officers and fire and rescue teams were sent to Lafayette Road after a woman called 911, unable to revive a male friend. Despite efforts to revive him, he was declared deceased at the scene.

Capt. Darrin Sargent, the commander of the investigation division of the Portsmouth Police Department, announced Monday that the cause and manner of death, while still be investigated, appears to be drug related.

"If, in fact, the death is due to a drug overdose, it will be the second confirmed overdose death in Portsmouth this calendar year," he said. "The Portsmouth Police Department has responded to 15 non-fatal drug overdoses to date in 2019. This agency investigated 5 drug related deaths in 2018."
