Portsmouth Public Library Gets 3D Printer
"Gutenberg" is available for use for a small fee.

The Portsmouth Public Library is excited to introduce its newest addition, a MakerBot Replicator 3D Printer, according to a press statement. After holding a name contest, we’ve decided to call it Gutenberg!
With access to this new technology, the library plans to foster tinkering, collaborative and intergenerational learning, play, experimentation, problem solving and creation. 3D Printing is becoming more and more common in manufacturing, design and commerce. As always, the library’s goal is to provide affordable learning opportunities to all. 3D Printers are expensive to own and use - but at the library you’ll have access to this new technology for a very low cost.
Gutenberg prints objects with PLA filament, an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective material that’s made from corn. PLA can be recycled or composted, and comes in many different colors!

To start, the library will be offering two services:
- Meet Gutenberg! We’ll hold a demo session in the library each week. Stop by the Lobby or Youth Services to see Gute in action. See some of the things we’ve made so far. Learn more about the process and the machine! Gutenberg will be out and about at a different time each week - go to facebook.com/pplnh/events for upcoming dates and times.
- 3D Printing on Demand. In April, Portsmouth Public Library cardholders ages 10+ will be able to request prints at a charge of 5 cents per gram. Most small objects are $1 to $3.
If you’d like to request a print, just follow this process:
