Restaurant, Apartments Destroyed by Fire in Portsmouth
Breaking: 6 alarm fire destroys building, apartments; police warn that State Street will be inaccessible for a while this morning.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — Portsmouth Fire and Rescue teams and other departments were called to a massive fire this morning at the State Street Saloon at 286 State St. in Portsmouth that destroyed a number of buildings and left a number of tenants homeless. According to NH Fire Alarm, the first call was made at just before 1 a.m. on April 10, 2017.

Firefighters from Exeter and other communities were called to the scene to assist with mutual aid, according to alerts online.

Police requested that residents avoid the area in order to allow fire crews to work the scene.
“The State Street Saloon fire continues to be a very active scene. State St. at Pleasant St. will be inaccessible for quite some time … please seek alternate routes to your destination,” the department wrote on Facebook at around 6 a.m.
Janet Vaughn of the American Red Cross noted that its disaster action team volunteers had assisted tenants of the building this morning to ensure that they have essentials and will work with them in the coming days to assist.
