Spring Films Start Next Month at the Portsmouth Library

Light refreshments will be served in the Levenson Room during showings.

Join us for our spring film series in April and May. We’ll be showing newly released films so you can catch up on your viewing! As always, these films are open to the public and FREE. Light refreshments are served.

April 9 | Birdman

A darkly comic story of an actor famous for portraying an iconic superhero as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Rated R, 119 minutes.

A chronicle of one woman’s 1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe. Rated R, 115 minutes.

April 30 | The Next Black

This documentary explores questions about the future of fashion. Will mass consumption of clothing continue to escalate? Or will we return to creating quality and caring about what we wear? Will the future be centered around smart clothing and new technologies? Or will we find innovation within organic and traditional methods? Not rated, 45 minutes. Mike Leigh’s latest film explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady. Rated R, 150 minutes.

May 28 | Still Alice

Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes.
