The Historic District Commission will have the future of Ceres St in its hand when it holds a public hearing on the development of the historic grain warehouse at 173-5 Market Street this Wed June 18, 7 pm. The Zoning Board of Adjustment overturned HDC approval of the bulging waterfront addition to the aged brick structure amid concerns that it would overwhelm the waterfront side of the 19th century building where alemaking tycoon Frank Jones stored grain—violating national preservation standards. Critics also worry that the massive addition will forever change the historic character of Ceres Street.
The HDC is the land use board charged with protecting the city’s historic character and sense of place, and HDC Chairman Joseph Almeida has expressed strong enthusiasm for the waterfront project. To contact the HDC, you can email them all via llgood@cityofportsmouth.com
Mayor Lister has a chance to name someone who is aesthetically-inclined and strong enough to protect the city's character in the current climate. What Mayor Lister does remains to be seen. To contact him, email rjlportsmouth@yahoo.com
