Time for adventure and more this summer at New Heights
New Heights' summer adventure programs and workshops are different from just a day camp experience.

Adventure experiences and week-long workshops that include everything from stop motion animation to robotics, photography, blogging and more highlight this summer at New Heights.
Adventure
For those interested in the outdoors, New Heights offers experiences in surfing, rock climbing, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and other activities. Most programs take place on just one day with one extended canoe expedition to the Adirondacks.
Some examples of one-day adventure experiences this summer at New Heights include Indoor Skydiving & Swimming, Boogie Boarding in York, ME, Attitash Alpine Slide/Mountain Coaster, and Sea Kayaking.

“We provide youth with an opportunity to try activities they might not have a chance to try on their own with their families,” said Sally Gregory, adventure coordinator. “Many of our summer staff have been with us for a long time, too, so we have a good sense for what works well in adventure programs.”
Workshops
During the summer, workshops run every week and introduce middle school age participants to a variety of activities based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).

According to STEAM Coordinator Wayne Moulton, diversity typifies their workshop offerings this summer.
“We have all kinds of experiences this summer for kids,” he said. “Kids can learn about video game design, visit local farms and learn about different cooking styles, put down their thoughts with pen and paper in a writing workshop and more. We work hard to create workshops that reflect the interests of youth today.”
Other workshop examples include Arts & Culture Sampler, Young Hollywood (stop motion animation), and Circus Skills 2.0.
Behind the Summer Program
Aside from the fun aspect, there is an intentionality behind New Heights' adventure programs and workshops that distinguish it from just a day camp experience.
“We focus on the social and emotional intelligence of participants, build up their self-esteem, and help them develop critical thinking skills,” said Tracey Tucker, executive director. “It's fun but with a larger purpose, which is to help youth build skills they can apply in every facet of their lives moving forward.”
Assistant Director Meghan Rice agrees and added, “We plan these programs beginning the previous fall.”
In summing up the summer program at New Heights, Rice said it is “like nothing else.”
“Whether your child wants to try archery for the first time or program a robot, we have it here and all guided by expert, trained staff,” she said.
New Heights charges program fees, but offers need-based scholarships and all equipment necessary to participate. To register or learn more about New Heights’ Summer Program, visit www.newheightsonline.org, or call (603) 422-8235.
