Vets Can Learn Martial Arts for Free
V-MAT in Portsmouth is a new physical, mental, spiritual program to assist men and women who have served.

PORTSMOUTH, NH -V-MAT, founded by Portsmouth resident Scott Lombardo, is introducing a program to teach United States Military Veterans for free, according to a press statement.
Founded last year, V-MAT is a 501(c)3 Non Profit Charitable Trust aimed at teaching the daily life balance and benefits the Martial Arts offer. Students will learn the benefits the martial arts has on the human mind, psyche and behavior. The calming effect is learned through the physical practice of traditional kata (forms), as well as breathing techniques, decision making skills and the evaluation process of when to passively or actively defend oneself - or simply walk away. Martial Arts have been proven to assist in the physical, mental and spiritual stability of many issues in all walks of life.
"When a warrior comes home from battle, it is a difficult transition process that requires more than flipping a light switch to turn off that thought process," according to Lombardo. "The camaraderie, brotherhood/ sisterhood, discipline and balance required in martial arts training are the same characteristics required to handle the stresses of daily life, as well as it’s more challenging situations."

About the founder
Master Scott Lombardo began his martial arts studies in 1990. He is well rounded in the culture, history and philosophy of the arts, in addition to the physical aspect of forms, sparring and self-defense. In addition to the demanding requirements for his current rank of 6th Dan, Scott spent two years in the late 1990s redesigning the Isshinryu Karate system in order to offer martial arts instruction to amputee students, with and without prosthetics. He has also successfully taught students with learning disabilities, including ADD, and ADHD, as well as women’s self defense and rape prevention courses in his home state of New Jersey. He has also competed in the karate tournament circuit in several states before settling in New Hampshire.
