"Wabanaki Agriculture: Seeds Of Renewal" in Portsmouth NH on April 1

On Saturday, April 1, from 1pm to 5pm, "Wabanaki Agriculture: Seeds Of Renewal" will be presented by Dr. Fred Wiseman at The Urban Forestry Center, 45 Elwyn Rd, Portsmouth NH. This program acquaints attendees with the historic and contemporary food systems of the VT/NH Abenakis and their Wabanaki neighbors from an Indigenous perspective.

Learn about The Wabanaki Seed Catalog, including Dr. Wiseman's stories of chasing down the seeds, how they turned out in cultivation, their taste and nutrition and tips on how to properly grow them together. He also discusses the implications of deep-time Wabanaki crops to food security in a time of climatic and ecological uncertainty. Using the academic discipline of Ethnobotany, counterbalanced with a Native American perspective, he explores many facets of the relationship of our region's Indigenous communities to their domesticated foods through lecture, slide shows, demonstrations, and displays.

Other topics discussed will include: Indigenous Food Systems Revitalization and the Seeds of Renewal's unique mission in working towards Indigenous-based Food Security and Sovereignty; Designing the Abenaki garden; The Wabanaki Agroforest; Harvest Season and Indigenous Wabanaki foodways/cuisine.

Dr Wiseman says of this program: "Such a workshop as this cannot be taught simply as an academic exercise. The legacy of the continual transfer of Indigenous lands, resources, children, material goods, crops and ideas through 18th century conquest, early 20th century genocide and late 20th century appropriation of intellectual property, demands an Indigenous perspective and a balance."
