Wait, Your Stylist Did What?

By Sheryl Miller-Rideout, Artistic Director, Fringe Hair Salon

Has the newness of the relationship with your stylist worn off? Do they point
to the “bowl” and come over and just put you back, scrub/splash your hair
and never talk about any sort of plan? Too short, too long, I thought I was
growing my bangs out??

Whether you’ve been with the same stylist for the past 10 years, or you’ve
hopped from one boutique to the next, you should always be treated as a
“new” client. The stylists responsibility is to offer change that is thoughtful.
Different hair color placement for different times of the year. Constantly
adjusting, making it better, always focused on you and your hair. The
chatting can happen once all of that is done. The should be directing the
conversation and be in charge of the appointment to instill confidence in you
so that whenever you come in, you just sit back and enjoy the ride.

So, what should a great stylist always be doing for their clients? Here are
the top five ways stylists make sure their clients are always taken care of.

They know You
The second you walk in the salon door, you should be greeted, even if it’s
just a nod or eye contact with someone. They should become familiar with
your verbal and non verbal cues. Sometimes you visit the salon in a great
mood, ready to chat away and open up. In those cases, they should be
ready to lend an ear and hold a lively conversation. On the other hand, you
may walk into the salon after a long, hard day, looking forward to relaxing or
de-stressing during your appointment. They should be able to respect your
need for peace and quiet while keeping light conversation.

They discuss budget, time and skill
Your experience at the salon may have been perfect, you left with great hair,
everyone was happy. Then, a few weeks go by and you already have roots
because maintenance was never discussed and suddenly your married to
your hair dresser. Or, the same great overall experience and then you go to
do it yourself at home for the first time and you freak out, hate it, hate your
hair dresser and get in a fight with your man because they just don’t get it.

They Keep it Professional
Professional, such an over used word that has no real meaning if your aren’t
basing it on any scale. Professionalism at McDonalds is when you ask for a
large fry and they give it to you. Professionalism at The Four Seasons is
sitting down for a breakfast meeting, dressed in black and having them come
exchange your white linen napkin for a black linen napkin as to not get white
lint on your cloths. Which one are you looking for?

They teach you how to work with your hair
It’s nice to leave with beautiful salon hair, however, you are only with your
hair stylist, on average, 7-10X a year. What does your hair look like the rest
of the year? If that question makes you cringe, it shouldn’t.

They are open to feed back
After you have had your hair done, especially if it is a change, your stylist
should give you ample confidence in calling if there are any challenges.
When you initially begin to work with a stylist, it may take them a few times
to get you to where you need to be. Often times the person who was doing
your hair prior probably does things slightly different. Hair is truly an art and
a science and it doesn’t happen right away all of the time.

If you have never experienced any of the above during a salon visit, you may
want to reconsider where you schedule your next appointment. Salons are
where we go to pamper ourselves and feel good. A stylist’s success is
directly related to how they treat their clients. Every time you leave your
stylist’s chair, you should feel refreshed and ready to take on the world!
