Why Was the Memorial Bridge Lit Blue?

A group raised $200,000 to light the bridge year-round.

The Memorial Bridge was lit blue at night over the weekend as a test before the official illumination event leading up to the First Night celebration.

The Memorial Bridge Illumination Subcommittee raised nearly $200,000 to illuminate the bridge throughout the year.

Committee member Jon Di Gesu said an exact date for the lighting event has not been set yet.

"Next step will be to test the color changing programs — there will be 12 initial programs that will have the bridge change colors over different time periods," Di Gesu said. "Once the programs are set, tested and ready to go the bridge will be lighted. Our goal is to have this done for the towers and piers before or by First Night."
