World Trade Center Steel I-Beam Coming to Portsmouth
8-foot artifact will be part of permanent 9/11 memorial; Chief Stephen DuBois will be Tweeting the motorcade's progress on Sept. 2.

During the last five years, the Portsmouth Police Department has been working to obtain an artifact from the wreckage of the World Trade Center to form what the centerpiece of a permanent Sept. 11 memorial in the city.
Earlier this month, according to Capt. Frank Warchol, the department received word that it had been awarded an 1,100 lb. 8-foot steel i-beam, which will soon be heading to Portsmouth.
On Sept. 2, the steel i-beam will be coming to Portsmouth.

According to Warchol, a motorcade of honor will escort the i-beam along I-95 and into Portsmouth via the Market Street Extension. It will then travel up Market Street, through the Square, and then onto Junkins Avenue and over to South Mill Pond to headquarters.
Police said the i-beam will be on display for about a few hours before it is safely secured.

“Make sure you are there to see it,” noted Warchol in a statement. ”This is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. Everyone is encouraged to come out.”
Chief Stephen DuBois will be Tweeting the motorcade’s progress (@portsmouthchief). Police expect it to reach the city by mid-afternoon if all goes as planned.
