The Yoken's Sign Is Up

Portsmouth landmark, historic sign renovation to be celebrated on Friday.

Yoken’s Restaurant was a well-known family owned business for more than 50 years in Portsmouth. Its sign, an enormous whale, became a landmark on Route 1 for many generations. Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank partnered with The 4 Amigos, LLC to fund the restoration and reinstallation of this historic sign, which is now complete and set to be revealed at their newest branch and plaza location, according to a press statement.

President and CEO, Janice C. Morse is enthusiastic about the completion of the sign, saying, “It’s an honor to be able to participate in the restoration of this iconic sign, which is truly a part of Portsmouth’s history. We can’t wait to relight the sign and display it for years to come.”

The official relighting of the Yoken’s Sign will be Friday, May 15, at Yoken’s Commons (1390 Lafayette Road), Portsmouth. The public lighting will be at 8:00 pm; with live music proceeding and concluding the event. Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank is dedicated to preserving the Greater Seacoast’s rich past, while also contributing to a bright future for the communities in which it is serves.
