Aldi Opens in Salem

About 100 shoppers poured into the store after their opening Thursday.

The Eagle-Tribune reported new Salem supermarket Aldi at 541 South Broadway opened its doors Thursday to a large crowd despite the snowstorm, with about 100 shoppers checking out the store at opening.

Customers at the opening told the Eagle-Tribune they were "astounded" at how low Aldi's prices were compared to other area supermarkets.

has about 1,200 stores in 32 states, including six in Massachusetts. The chain claims it can save customers 50 percent or more over what they'd spend at other grocery stores.
