American Kestrel 8/11

Not a rare sighting but one cool bird you won't find everyday, an American Kestrel, was spotted atop Spicket Hill on Sunday the 11th.

American Kestrels are small falcons, around the size of a Blue Jay, that eat bats, rodents, and some insects.  As was the case in this sighting, where the Kestrel was seen grabbing a big grasshopper from the grass.

The falcon was seen hunting from perches that included a telephone pole, light posts, and the many small trees at the top of the hill off Stanwood Ave.
