📰 News we're reading

1. NH towns assist with 3-alarm fire at Haverhill, Mass. mill with history of blazes (unionleader.com) — Firefighters from Salem were among many departments rushing mutual aid to a massive three‑alarm mill fire in nearby Haverhill, Massachusetts, early Tuesday. Crews battled heavy flames in a long‑troubled vacant building, closed multiple streets, and continued dousing hotspots for many hours, though no injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.

2. Lone suspect behind Brown, MIT attacks driven by perceived injustices, personal grievances, FBI says (washingtontimes.com) — Federal investigators say the lone suspect in the Brown University and MIT attacks was found dead in Salem where his firearms were stored and recovered. The FBI reports he acted alone, driven by long-standing personal grievances and perceived injustices rather than terrorism. Agents traced his planning back to a Salem storage unit he obtained in 2022.

3. Open enrollment bill's future uncertain after GOP split (vnews.com) — Salem’s state representative, John Sytek, helped derail a universal open enrollment school bill, warning it could hurt districts that lose many students even if Salem itself might fare better. The vote exposed a major Republican split, with several lawmakers from poorer or property tax–sensitive communities rejecting the party’s school choice push over funding, fairness, and special education concerns.

4. FBI: Man who killed Brown students, MIT professor targeted symbolic victims tied to grievances (pbn.com) — A multistate manhunt for a former Brown University student ended when he was found dead in a Salem storage facility, according to federal investigators. Authorities say he spent years planning symbolic attacks tied to personal grievances, killing two Brown students and an MIT professor before dying of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Injured students are now suing Brown, alleging security failures.
