• North Hampton Man Indicted On Murder, Falsifying Evidence Charges: Rockingham County Superior Court Roundup (patch.com) — Rockingham County prosecutors have secured a series of indictments, including several tied directly to Salem, such as an unreturned vehicle at Canobie Lake Toyota, alleged bad checks to BJ’s Wholesale Club, and shoplifting cases at local retailers. The roundup also details drug, weapons, and violent crime charges from nearby communities, underscoring ongoing regional public safety and court activity affecting Salem-area residents.
• Committee Reaches Compromise on Bill Limiting Local Firearm Restrictions (indepthnh.org) — A Salem-based state senator, Daryl Abbas, helped shape a compromise on HB 609, a bill tightening state control over local firearm and self-defense tool regulations. House and Senate negotiators agreed to language reinforcing state supremacy over towns and agencies while clarifying employee rights and rulemaking oversight. The deal moves New Hampshire closer to stronger preemption of local gun-related policies.
• Back from the dead, Senate drops opposition to business tax cut bill (unionleader.com) — Salem Rep. Joe Sweeney played a key role in reviving a statewide business tax-cut bill that also boosts Medicaid funding for nursing homes. Lawmakers agreed to a conditional cut in the Business Enterprise Tax and added millions in aid for long-term care facilities. The compromise heads to full House and Senate votes on June 4 and is expected to pass.
