SALEM, NH — Town residents who need to register to vote before the New Hampshire State General Election will have a chance to do so at a special session Thursday.
The Supervisors of the Checklist of Salem will be in session from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 on the lower level of the Municipal Office Building.
The session is for registering new voters for the upcoming state general election. Prospective new voters must be 18 years of age and present a photo ID, proof of domicile, and proof of citizenship.
A driver's license is acceptable as both picture ID and proof of domicile. For proof of citizenship, residents may use a birth certificate or United States passport. Naturalized citizens must show documented citizenship papers or a United States passport.
Residents also may register to vote with the Town Clerk during regular office hours through Thursday.
The notice also advises voters to update their address before Election Day if they have moved. State law requires voters to vote at the polling place where they are listed on the checklist. The document advises changing their address beforehand.
If a voter goes to a polling place different from the one listed on the checklist, they may be asked to go to the original polling place. For residents who want to confirm their status before voting, copies of the current voter checklist are available at the Kelley Library reference desk and at the Town Clerk's office.
