Atkinson Man Arrested for DUI, Other Charges

Salem Police: Alexander DiMaggio injected heroin, OD'd, crashed his SUV at the Mall at Rockingham Park, tried to flee, and crashed again.

A local man is facing numerous charges after crashing his SUV at the mall after an alleged drug overdose, according to police.

Alexander DiMaggio, 28, of Atkinson, was arrested at Oct. 4, 2015, for reckless conduct, driving under the influence of drugs and possession of heroin.

According to police, an officer was patrolling the mall parking lot when he reportedly saw a suspicious vehicle propped up against a light pole.

The driver of the vehicle, DiMaggio, “appeared unconscious behind the wheel with a quantity of heroin clearly visible within the driver’s control,” according to a report by Sgt. Joseph L. Keating of the Salem Police Department.

“Concerned for the driver’s well being, the officer attempted to make contact,” according to Keating. “The driver regained consciousness and abruptly drove off, crashing into the rear of a parked vehicle and continuing over a tree, coming to a final rest on a fire hydrant.”

The officer allegedly recovered a quantity of heroin from the vehicle. There were no injuries as a result of the incident, according to the report.

DiMaggio was arrested and held on $2,500 cash bail. He’ll be arraigned tomorrow or on Oct. 19, if he can post bail later this evening, in Salem District Court.

According to a report on Seacoastonline.com, DiMaggio was arrested for possession of controlled/narcotic drugs by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office in November 2012.
