Kuster Talks to Seniors About Federal Issues

Rep. launches Congress In Your Corner program.

U.S. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, D-NH, held a seniors town hall at the Nashua Senior Activity Center yesterday to hear from local seniors about how she can best continue to advocate for their needs at the federal level. Seniors from across the Nashua area were invited to attend the town hall to share their thoughts and concerns with the Congresswoman.

“I was so pleased to host this seniors town hall, where I got a chance to hear directly from local seniors about the issues that directly affect them here in the Granite State,” said Kuster. “I’ve long fought to protect the programs our seniors care about, like Medicare and Social Security, and during today’s town hall I heard from seniors on a variety of topics including protecting Social Security and Medicare, affordable housing, and accessible transportation options. I look forward to taking their thoughts and concerns back to Washington, where I will continue to fight for the priorities that matter to Granite State seniors.”

During the town hall forum, local seniors spoke directly with the Congresswoman about the issues affecting them. Additionally, the town hall gave local seniors a chance to provide input for this year’s White House Conference on Aging, a summit where White House officials develop a national agenda for supporting older Americans. In order to ensure that Granite State priorities are taken into consideration, Kuster will share the comments from this afternoon’s town hall with the organizers of the White House Conference on Aging. Kuster was joined at the town hall by local experts on seniors’ issues (including Social Security, Medicare, and other services seniors rely on) who were able to provide additional insight and guidance for the seniors in attendance.

This town hall also marked the launch of Kuster’s new Congress In Your Corner program, which is a continuation of the many constituent events the Congresswoman has held across the state. Congress in Your Corner will consist of a series of issues forums and other events, like the seniors town hall, that Kuster will be hosting to hear from her constituents at places that are most convenient to them, right in their own backyards. Congress In Your Corner events will take place at local seniors centers, schools, libraries, coffee shops and other locations that are heavily frequented by Second District residents in their local communities.

Kuster has a long history of working to protect the best interests of New Hampshire’s senior community. She’s fought against harmful cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and she cosponsored a House resolution opposing President Obama’s budget proposal that would use “chained CPI” to calculate Social Security benefits. She has also advocated for increased funding for research into diseases that affect New Hampshire’s senior community, like Alzheimer’s, and last year she introduced legislation to increase Social Security benefits for individuals who are providing full-time caregiving service to loved ones and other elderly Granite Staters in need of care. Kuster routinely hosts seniors issues forums at senior centers across the Second District to hear directly from the New Hampshire seniors community about the issues that matter to them.
