Local Scrap Metal Firm Fined

Gateway Resource Recovery accepted 14 buckets of lead powder from a Massachusetts contractor.

The Eagle-Tribune reported Thursday that Gateway Resource Recovery on 69 Lowell Road in Salem has been fined $20,000 by the state after they admitted to accepting hazardous material containing led.

The paper reported Gateway filed a guilty plea in Rockingham County Superior Court this week and admitted it should have have taken the waste. According to the paper, Gateway accepted 14 buckets of lead powder from a Massachusetts contractor.

A Gateway spokeswoman told the Eagle-Tribune the lead material was accepted accidentally. She also said the lead was accepted by the firm before Gateway Enviroservices and its parent company, ReEnergy Holdings, acquired the firm in August 2009.
