Officers were sent to the hotel at around 4 a.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance, according to Capt. Joel Dolan of the Salem Police Department.
“The caller reported that she could hear a male subject outside yelling to let him in the hotel room,” he noted.

Officers found a broken key in the doorknob to the hotel room and made contact with a woman in the room who alleged that Coelho had beaten and choked her, according to the report.
“The female victim was very upset and had visible marks on her arms and neck area, indicating an assault had just taken place,” Dolan alleged.
The woman stated that Coelho reportedly came to her room to talk but during the course of the conversation, “Coelho became agitated, grabbed onto her, forced her to the bed and began choking her.” Another woman tried to separate them and Coelho reportedly left. However, he returned to demand his car keys, according to Dolan, and “began to assault the female victim again by hitting her in the face and choking her … (he) also ransacked the hotel room, causing damage to the bathroom door and living area table prior to leaving the room.”
Police were unable to locate Coelho but his vehicle was still in the parking lot, according to Dolan. Officers called in the K-9 unit, Trigger, who was able to reportedly locate Coelho behind the hotel, “crouched behind a tree.” He allegedly refused to comply with officer’s orders to come out so Trigger was deployed to apprehend Coelho.
Coelho was taken to Parkland Medical Center for “precautionary reasons,” according to police, processed, charged, and held on the cash bail. He was arraigned yesterday.
