PetSmart Reaches Settlement With State

The company allegedly sold pet products with high levels of cadmium in their packaging.

, which has a location at 290 South Broadway in Salem, has reached a settlement with the state following allegations the company sold packages with cadmium that exceeded state guidelines.

According to the N.H. Attorney General's office, PetSmart will pay the state $15,000 for allegedly selling "pet products in flexible PVC packaging that contained levels of cadmium that exceeded State regulatory limits and failed to submit Certificates of Compliance upon request."

Under the terms, the AG's office said the company did not admit liability for the alleged violations.

"Half of this money is paid as a penalty and the remainder will be used to further enforcement of laws prohibiting toxic metals in packaging material," according to the AG's office statement. "In addition, PetSmart will implement internal measures to ensure that no further violations occur, including measures to ensure that Certificates of Compliance are submitted on time."
