Police: Son Faked Burglary to Steal Cash from Parents

Salem Police allege that there were "numerous holes" to David Delaurier's break-in story.

What police first thought was a burglary in progress turned out to be an inside job, according to allegations they have made against a local man who was crashing with his parents.

David Delaurier Jr., 32, of Salem, was arrested on March 8, 2015, and charged with burglary and false reports to law enforcement.

According to a report, officers were sent to a residential burglary in process call last night.

The caller, who was temporarily staying at his parents’ home, reportedly told dispatchers that he had “just confronted a male who was attempting to kick in his parent’s bedroom door,” according to Lt. Joel Dolan.

The caller allegedly stated that a man then fled out of the home, through a back door, while he gave chase. The suspect then left the area in a gray Honda Civic.

“Upon speaking with the caller, officers realized his story had numerous holes and physical evidence at the scene did not corroborate the depiction of events given by the witness,” Dolan alleged. “The homeowners, who had been allowing their son to stay with them, eventually arrived home and determined a specific quantity of money was missing from their bedroom. During the investigation, officers were able to locate all of the money in the caller’s bedroom, in the exact denominations described by the parents. The money was recovered and returned to the parents.”

Delaurier was then arrested, processed, refused bail, and will be arraigned this morning.
