SAINT ANSELM COLLEGE
Rimonda Maroun, a criminal justice major from Salem, is one of 40 students who was recently inducted into Saint Anselm College's TAU Chapter of the Delta Epsilon Sigma honor society, recognizing her for achieving academic excellence and providing noteworthy service to the college and surrounding community.
Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, staff, and alumni of colleges with a Catholic heritage. The honor society fosters scholarly activities and encourages a spirit of intellectual community among its members. Over one hundred colleges and universities have been granted chapter status since Delta Epsilon Sigma was founded in 1939.
Juniors must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and seniors a 3.1 cumulative grade point average to apply for membership. Applicants are selected by a committee of TAU chapter faculty and administrators based on academic standing, leadership, and service to the college and community.
Hannah Greenlaw, of Salem, a senior nursing major at Saint Anselm College, received a Saint Anselm College nurse's pin at the 2012 pinning ceremony in the Abbey Church on April 28.
It was a special day for Greenlaw, who received a pin featuring elements of the college's official seal and the symbol of a lamp referring to Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp of my stamps and a light for my path." Dr. Sharon George, dean of nursing, pinned her with the Saint Anselm pin to wear for the entirety of her career.
The pinning ceremony is a celebration of a student's completion of Saint Anselm College's respected nursing program and symbolizes preparedness to serve as a compassionate caregiver in the healthcare setting.
Greenlaw will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing on May 19 at Saint Anselm College's commencement ceremonies.
WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE
Kyle Patrick Cayabyab of Salem, a junior majoring in Management Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), recently completed an intensive, applied research project in Santa Fe for D-Term. The project was titled SPEED, High-Speed Santa Fe.
At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that addresses a problem at the intersection of science, technology, social issues, and human needs. About 50 percent of WPI students complete this project at one of the university's 26 off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people's lives-and make a difference before they graduate.
"The WPI project-based curriculum brings students out of the classroom and their comfort zones and into the global community to apply their knowledge to solve real problems," said Professor Richard Vaz, dean of WPI's Interdisciplinary and Global Studies Division. "Students are immersed in all aspects of a different culture, from the way people live and work to the values they hold to the foods they eat-all valuable perspectives for surviving and thriving in today's global marketplace. They also learn the meaning and power of teamwork; make a real and meaningful difference in their host community; and gain a competitive edge for any résumé, or graduate or professional school application."
