The School Board approved a request Tuesday to spend $3,300 to help defray the cost of the Salem High School chorus' upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall.
The students will be taking a bus to New York City for the performance, and the Salem High School Parents Music Club has already pledged $6,000 toward the trip. School Superintendent Michael Delahanty said he was looking to contribute another $3,300 in funds from the supplies accounts at the high school, but needed School Board approval to do so. The board voted 5-0 to allow the funds to be used for this purpose.
"This will help those students who are going down to perform diminish or minimize their personal expenses," Delahanty said. "It is unusual, but I think this particular kind of trip is something that is a feather in the district's cap. It's a significant opportunity and warrants the additional financial support."
The chorus is expected to purchase a copy of the performance so it can be shown on local cable access afterward.
