Law enforcement officers, K-9 unit were searching for a runaway juvenile with a handgun who has since been found.

At around 8:15 a.m. this morning, the Salem Police Department took a report of a runaway juvenile, according to an alert from Lt. Joel Dolan of the police department. Also missing from the residence was a handgun that belonged to the juvenile’s guardian.

The Salem Police Department Patrol Division, Investigative Services Unit, and K9 Unit began an extensive search of the area to locate the juvenile on Sept. 23, 2015, and also notified the Salem School District about the situation.

“The decision was made to activate the district’s shelter in place protocol,” Dolan noted. “At no point were any threats made to any schools, students, or staff. This action was taken out of an abundance of precaution.”
