Salem Man Charged with Robbery
Police arrest Nelson Cooper at the Market Basket on South Broadway on May 10.

SALEM, NH - A local man was arrested and held on cash bail yesterday after allegedly attempting to remove a cart full of groceries from the Market Basket on South Broadway.
Nelson Cooper, 53, of Salem, was arrested on May 10, 2016, and charged with robbery and willful concealment, both felonies.

Police were sent to the store at just before 10:30 a.m. for a report of a shoplifting incident, according to police.

When the officer arrived, he spoke with the manager of the store who alleged that the suspect had allegedly attempted to leave the groceries.
“As the manager attempted to stop the male, he became agitated and began to push the manager away with his hands by striking him in the chest,” according to Capt. Joel Dolan of the Salem Police Department. “The suspect then went back to the office where he later attempted to flee by jumping over a counter and in the process knocked a computer off of a desk.”
Officers were able to arrest Nelson later, according to the report. He was held on $15,000 cash bail overnight and arraigned.
