Salem Police Recover Missing Rifle
Good Samaritan turns in Colt M4 rifle after seeing news report.
A missing Salem Police officer’s semi-automatic rifle has been turned into police, according to spokesman Lt. Joel Dolan.

The rifle, which was unsecured in the back of a police cruiser and went missing sometime between 3:45 and 11:45 p.m. yesterday, was turned in “a Good Samaritan who saw the information in the news,” according to Dolan.

Dolan said earlier today that the department was embarrassed by the lapse in security and would be conducting an internal investigation into the matter. A review of practices so that such a lapse does not occur in the future would also be conducted, he stated.
