State Police: Motorists have Struck 19 Cruisers So Far this Winter

During storm events, hazardous road conditions, drivers in New Hampshire need to slow down, use caution when approaching accidents.

The New Hampshire State Police Department has issued an alert requesting that motorists slow down and use caution during storm events and when road conditions are dangerous.

State Police have seen an increase of 300 percent in the number of cruisers that have been struck on state roadways during storm conditions so far this winter. According to a statement, motorists have struck 19 cruisers. In a normal winter season, it tends to be five or six accidents.

“Although many drivers have adjusted their driving appropriately for such challenging conditions, a significant number have not,” stated Lt. Matthew Shapiro, “resulting in property damage and injury. In the majority of these cases, driving too fast for the road conditions was the causal factor.”

Shapiro requested in a statement that drivers “drive at a speed appropriate for road conditions. Don’t jeopardize your life or the lives of others,” and when approaching emergency vehicles, such as a police cruiser or ambulance, to “reduce speed and give a wide berth, without endangering oncoming traffic, to public safety personnel, any persons in the roadway, and stationary vehicles displaying blue, red, or amber emergency or warning lights.”
